How does sex affect urinary tract infections?

Sep 17, 2024Devicare

As we have mentioned in previous posts, urinary tract infections are more common in women than in men. This is mainly because the female urethra is short (approximately 3cm), making it much easier for bacteria to enter. Therefore, women are more vulnerable to urinary tract infections after sexual intercourse. 3

Can I catch a urinary tract infection?

A urinary tract infection is not contagious, but the reality is that having sex increases the likelihood of getting a urinary tract infection, mainly because friction and compression of the urethra can be an entry point for bacteria and germs. 1

Other factors that contribute to sexual intercourse facilitating urinary tract infections should also be considered:

  • Oral contraceptives weaken the bladder lining due to hormones, and facilitate the colonization of bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections.
  • The use of condoms alters the mucous membranes of the vagina and bladder, thus also contributing to the development of urinary tract infections.
  • Lack of hygiene in the intimate area and not emptying the bladder before sexual intercourse is another practice that facilitates the development of urinary tract infections.

Can I have sex while I have a urinary tract infection?

You can have sex while you have a urinary tract infection, but it is not advisable, as in addition to potentially transmitting the bacteria, sex can worsen symptoms and make them more intense. It is estimated that 60% of recurrent cystitis cases are explained exclusively by frequent sexual intercourse. 4

Furthermore, it should be noted that the bladder is located directly above the vagina, and any pressure on it while it is infected will be very painful, making sex far from pleasurable for a woman in these circumstances.2

How to prevent urinary tract infections after sex?

  • It is advisable to urinate immediately after sexual intercourse, as this will flush out any germs that may have entered the urethra.
  • Try to clean the genitals before and after sexual intercourse. In the case of women, remember to always do it from the vulvar area backwards. There are specific gels for intimate hygiene such as Urogelus®, which has the highest concentration of tea tree on the market.
  • During post-menopause, use lubricants to reduce friction and abrasion of the urethra.
  • Remember that there are food supplements like Metiofitina® that help acidify urinary pH and maintain the well-being of your urinary system.
