¿Por qué tengo dolor cuando me quitan el stent?

Why do I have pain when my stent is removed?

Feb 18, 2025Devicare

A urinary stent is a small tube temporarily placed in the ureters to maintain proper urine flow. This can be a source of discomfort and pain. You will usually have a stent placed to relieve blockages in the urinary tract, such as those caused by kidney stones or infections, and although its removal is necessary, it is common to experience pain, burning, or discomfort in the urinary tract.

The removal of a urinary stent can cause various discomforts due to irritation and inflammation of the urinary tract tissues. These are some of the factors that contribute to the pain:

  • Urinary tract irritation: During the time the stent has been in place, the ureters and bladder may have become irritated. Furthermore, in many cases, the stent may have calcified, and its removal may cause irritation in the area.
  • Post-operative inflammation: The stent may have caused inflammation in the surrounding tissues, and after its removal, the inflammation may temporarily persist, mainly due to any calcification it may have undergone.
  • Muscle spasms: The muscles of the urinary tract may experience spasms as they adjust after stent removal, causing pain or discomfort.
  • Risk of infection: In some cases, stent removal can facilitate the appearance of urinary tract infections if proper precautions are not taken.
